Jeff has maintained an active private teaching studio for over 25 years teaching sax, clarinet and flute. In that time he has developed a keen ability to asses where a student is at musically, determine that student's musical goals, and show the steps he or she will need to take to get there. While certain pedagogical methods have solidified into a set core of teaching principles (a method book is in the works!) his teaching approach is flexible and takes into consideration individual student needs, and desires.
Over the last 10 years, Jeff has been involved in a number of school instrumental music programs as a woodwind instructor, ensemble coach, band clinician, conductor and program coordinator. He has developed a large catalog of music specially arranged for groups of flutes, clarinets, and saxes, as well as mixed winds and full band arrangements.
As an offshoot of his sax quartet activities, Houndog has developed a flexible school assembly program for ages K-12 that uses a sax quartet as an entertaining way of introducing students to musical concepts and styles. The unique sound of a sax quartet makes the assembly a memorable one. A full compliment of support materials are available for classroom teachers, and the quartet also offers clinics to interested music programs.
After many years working as a teaching artist in the public schools, Jeff has developed an effective and fun recorder curriculum for working with grades 1-4 in a classroom setting. Students are taken from the beginner level to being able to play simple songs by ear and develop basic reading and musicianship skills. They are also prepared for future instrumental (especially woodwind) development.
